4th Grade Art

4th Graders are exploring Self-Portraits and using James Rizzi's painting, "A Good Day and A Bad Day" as their inspiration!

Students in Mr. McCarthy's class are finishing up their Rattles and beginning to take them home!
Some of the students decided to finish their rattles with water color paints...

Some decided to finish with Acrylic Paints...

Several decided to finish their rattles with Ceramic Glaze...

Acouple exploded in the kiln :( and they had to be remade...
And two brave students used my favorite finishing technique... Oil Pastels (or in this case slick sticks) and ink...
Finished Results...

4th Graders are starting their Clay Rattles!
Clay Rattles are a project that I love and create with 4th Grade every year! I love this project not only because it develops wonderful fine motor skills and a love of sculpture, but it also showcases student personality and creativity! Every year I am amazed at what my students create. I can't wait to share the pictures with you. Here are some pictures of Mrs. Young's class creating the basic rattle shape.

We begin his project by creating two pinch pots and between 4 to 5 small beads. We roll the beads up in paper towel and stuff the paper towel inside the pinch pots. Then we attach the two pinch pots and smooth the form until we have a smooth, round, clay ball. Next week the students will turn their rattle into something, and it will be fired!

4th Graders have finished their Picasso VS. Matisse Self-Portraits!

4th Graders are working on a Self-Portrait project titled: Picasso Vs. Matisse! We started this project listening to the book When Pigasso met Mootisse, and then followed that up with an introduction to the Real Rivalry/Friendship of the artists. We compared and contrasted their works and drew ourselves in the style of BOTH!!!! They are almost finished and they look WONDERFUL... Here are a few teaser pics!

These students are creating their clean, final drawing using the art room light pads! Then it is time to add color!

4th Grade will be starting off the year with a Fall Themed Painting, inspired by the Brazilian/American artist Romero Britto. His paintings are fun, colorful, and filled with patterns. As we work on our paintings we will be focusing on how to Create Tints and Shades of colors.

4th Grades are starting the year off with a multi-cultural project inspired by the Kuna Indians of Panama. The Kuna women create beautiful fabric Molas that feature designs inspired by their natural flora and fauna. We are creating "nontraditional Molas," with designs inspired by the modern world. Our Molas will feature traditional colors and patterns but nontraditional, modern day inspired designs. These brightly colored, multi-layered projects will be made with markers and construction paper, they are beautiful works of art. I will again post photos as the projects are finishing.
